Hens on the farm

The Farm

Overlooking the picturesque Northumberland village of Haydon Bridge, Shirley and Alistair Macdonald specialise in producing sturdy point of lay hens, ducks and geese. We supply these to commercial free range egg producers, and to back garden beginners who may need advice and help in keeping hens for the first time.

Our birds are well known for their robust egg-laying qualities and we are utterly committed to rearing them in a high quality environment. We aim to produce healthy, happy birds and our many customers know that we do just that.

We offer bulk discounts for larger consignments of pullets to commercial operators (phone for details) and for the amateur hen enthusiast, we offer low prices and a convenient, one stop service - hens, equipment, housing, and friendly advice.

All our hens are supplied at point of lay, which means at the age of about eighteen weeks - near the start of their egg-laying career. For the beginner, that means you can expect each hen to lay about half a dozen lovely eggs each week, for the first eighteen months, then after moulting, most will continue to lay at a slightly lower rate for years to come. Really, there is nothing quite like gathering eggs from your own contented hens - just ask any of our customers about the pleasure of looking after their 'girls'.
